ὕπτιος-ος, α, ον,

laid on one's back, frequently in [Refs 8th c.BC+], especially of one falling backwards, opposed to πρηνής, πολλοὶ δὲ πρηνεῖς τε καὶ ὕπτιοςοι ἔκπεσον [Refs 8th c.BC+]; ὕ. ἀποθανέειν to die lying on one's back, [ὕπτιοςον καθεύδειν οὐδενὶ βέλτιόν ἐστιν Diocl. fragment 141; κατεκλίνη ὕ. 5th-6th c.BC: Plato Philosophus “Phaedo” 117e, compare 2nd c.AD: Soranus Medicus 2.87, +others, 2nd c.AD: Galenus Medicus 18(2).56, +others; ὑ. ἀνατετραμμένος 5th-6th c.BC: Plato Philosophus “Euthydemus” 278c ">Refs 5th c.BC+]; of a quadruped, ὀρθοῦ ἑστεῶτος.. καὶ ὑπτίου standing upright and lying on its back, [Refs 5th c.BC+]

__II ὕ. μέρη, in animals, the under parts, i.e. the belly, opposed to τὰ πρανῆ (the upper parts, the back), [ὕπτιοςος">Refs 4th c.BC+] of the smoother upper surface of leaves, opposed to πρανής of the rougher and under: γαστὴρ ὑ. the belly uppermost, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; of the hand, ἐκτείνειν τὴν χεῖρ᾽ ὑ. to hold out the hand with the under side uppermost, to hold out the hollow of the hand, so as to receive something, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; also ὑ. τὰς χεῖρας ἀνατείνειν lift the upturned hands in prayers, [Refs 1st c.AD+]; ἐξ ὑπτίας νεῖν swim or float on one's back, [Refs 5th c.BC+]
__III generally, of anything turned downside up, πάλος ἐξ ὑπτίου 'πήδησεν.. κράνους from the upturned helmet, with the hollow uppermost, [Refs 8th c.BC+]; παράθες νυν ὑ. αὐτὴν ἐμοί (i.e. τὴν ἀσπίδα) [Refs 5th c.BC+]; ἁψῖδος ἥμισυ ὕπτιοςον a half-wheel with the concave side uppermost, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; but κύλιξ ὑ. a cup with the bottom uppermost, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; ὑπτίοις σέλμασιν ναυτίλλεται he sails with the benches upside down, i.e. suffers shipwreck, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; περιφέρεια κοίλη καὶ ὑ., opposed to πρηνὴς καὶ κυρτή, [Refs 4th c.BC+]

__IV of land, flat, horizontal, [Refs 5th c.BC+]; ὕ. μᾶλλον ἢ ὄρθιος, of a flight of shallow steps, [Refs 2nd c.AD+]; of the sea, smooth, [Refs 2nd c.AD+]
__V metaphorically, supine, lazy, careless, [Refs 2nd c.AD+]; ἔστω.. μὴ ὕ. ὁ τράχηλος his neck should not be relaxed, [Refs 4th c.BC+], compare 15.460; of language, flat, tedious, [Refs 1st c.BC+] adverb, ὑπτίως ἔχειν to be flat and dull, [Refs 1st c.AD+]
